Tipping?

So... often I wonder, why I have to tip the people who provide a service to me that make 'good money'....

Here's where I am...

Most peeps who do hair/nails/massages that are paid at a salon get 50% of the cost of the service. Massage costs $60-$75/hour, that means that the peep performing the serivce gets $30-35/hour. Why am I expected to tip on top of that?

My hair for a dye/cut is $90, I'm there for 1-1.5 hours. That's still $30/hour PLUS she usually does someone while I am processing. Why am I expected to tip on top of that?

Now, let me say this, I am not a stingy tipper, especially at a resturant where the peeps don't make that much money.

What is your thoughts? Seriously? Am I out of line?

I feel the same way. I tip generously when I feel it's called for such as a waitress who earns most of her income from tips, but I"m not sure how the hairdresser thing works out. I know mine rents her booth, plus pays for all of her hair color chemicals etc., so I don't know what her salary really breaks down to after all that. I have a feeling only the salon owner is getting making the most money!

When, I worked in a beauty salon a million years ago, we were paid half of what we brought in. The thing is, there are days that are slow...if you provide no services you earn no money! The months of January thru March were
killers...some saved tips to live off then.
What I don't understand is why they don't have to pay wait staff minimum wage!?

I've often wondered the same things....and couldn't agree with Trish more, WHY aren't servers paid minimum wage??? It makes no sense!
Well I might be biased because I do get a commission off grooms and I like getting tips, but sometimes what I charge isn't what it should be so getting a tip kinda evens it out.
We don't tip at all in Japan....absolutely never...
